UK motorists with reasonable expectations for refinement, ride quality, and price competitiveness should consider buying one of these cost-effective chic and agile Chinese imports.
Our review of the Leapmotor T03 5-door compact city car explains why it is seen as a strong rival for the likes of the Citroën ë-C3 and the Dacia Spring.
Leapmotor is one of many Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. They were first founded in 2015 and their headquarters is based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province eastern China.
The production and assembly of most of the Leapmotor lineup takes place in China. Currently, they are imported into Europe and incur up to 21% importation tax.
However...
After partnering with Stellantis, Leapmotor International designs the C10 family SUV and T03 electric city car for global markets. The China EV car manufacturer started producing the T03 in southern Poland (Tychy city) in June 2024.
Leapmotor's T03 is a compact EV that's been designed specifically for urban driving. As a result, many motorists in the UK will consider it as being a serious alternative to some of its rivals (e.g. the Fiat 500 electric hatchback).
The 2025 model comes with 37.3 kWh battery capacity and a range of up to 265 kilometres (165 miles).
Here's the deal:
The motor produces 94bhp and it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 12.7 seconds.
Charging options include the 45 kW DC fast-charging system that takes it from 30% to 80% in about 36 minutes.
The Leapmotor T03 EV is a small hatchback with five (5) doors and four (4) seats. It is 362 centimetres long, 165 centimetres wide, and 157 centimetres high. A wheelbase of 240 centimetres compliments the vehicle weight of 1122 kilograms.
It's fair to say several sportier rivals take some of the spotlight away from the T03, such as the BYD Dolphin and the Mini Electric.
Nonetheless, let's prioritise an equipment-laden compact urban runabout that is also easy to drive. For instance, parking is a cinch thanks to the light steering.
But wait - there's more:
Despite not being the best car for high ground clearance, the suspension does an adequate job of absorbing the inevitable bumps in the road.
But it has to be said, handling the roads at higher speeds is not a strong point. In fact, our Leapmotor test drive revealed a lack of stability and an increase in noise when approaching the maximum national speed limits on UK motorways.
Leapmotor has also met the grade after equipping the T03 with an impressive assortment of eye-catching designs, creative technology, and safety features, including:
It may take a little time for the Leapmotor car brand to gain full acceptance in Britain. Even so, it is a solid range with practicality at a very affordable price point. For anyone looking for a cheap entry into EV ownership, the T03 is an intriguing option.
By and large, the Leapmotor C10 attempts to deliver a smooth balance of performance, technology, and a value for money price tag.
We think it should appeal to UK motorists who are looking for one of the modern electric SUVs that have standout features and reliable range.
