Land and Training. An amalgamation of the two words Land and Training, gives the memorable (!) logo of LANTRA. I doubt that not many people would have guessed that without explanation. Sounds very much like a committee decision.
However, LANTRA fulfils a very useful function in training modules for land based trades and industries. The modules cover more or less all aspects of work connected with the land. Agriculture, Trees, landscaping and a host more. Where it fits into 4x4 activities should start to become obvious, for there are many land based industries that need to use 4x4 off road vehicles, and these are as disparate as Fire services and other rescue, armed forces, tree surgery and forestry sector just to mention a few.
As well as the proper driving skills off road, there are of course all maters to do with recovery - winching etc. Many courses are available for professionals to obtain the skills - and certification - in these spheres of professional activities.

LANTRA Training courses centred around winch work, will include specific needs for forestry staff, and trailer winch operations. Employers will need to ensure that their staff have received proper professional training to meet the standards' of personal safety - as well as complying with Health and Safety at Work regulations. Driver training leads to the LANTRA certification. This driver and operative training is essential for those involved in work where winching is part of the job.
Tree surgeons and landscapers - together with many farm staff can benefit from the training courses.
The safe recovery of vehicles off road is another specific item of the courses available, and will be essential for all involved professionally in driving vehicles in off road conditions and environments. Emergency services are often called upon to carry out off road recovery operation. Training is paramount if all aspects of safety and successful recovery of vehicles or other machinery is to be affected.
Recovery
will almost certainly cover aspects of lifting - either heavy vehicles
and even personnel out of difficult situations. In short, if anything
can go wrong in an area that calls for off road rescue, then the various
courses will equip you to deal with it. I am reminded of the time that I
had to report a cow stuck up to it's vital parts in mud, and sinking
fast. The fire brigade did a superb job in rescuing the animal -
seemingly without having to think as to what to do. Training had
obviously equipped them to carry out the job with skill.
Most counties in the UK will have training centres for off road or 4x4 based courses. We will be doing our best to search them out and list them for your convenience. As well as professional training, anyone else with a desire to conduct themselves in a professional manner whilst off road driving, will also benefit from many aspects of the course. This would certainly include the winch and recovery based courses.
Winch work and recovery skills are sometimes needed whilst doing genuine off road recreational driving. How much better it would be if you had received professional training - rather than simply guessing what to do. Whatever your experience.
